There's A Difference Between Marketing vs. Advertising

Marketing and Advertising, although they appear similar in reality they are quite different. Advertising is only a part of the bigger game called Marketing. Marketing encompasses the complete conceptualization of a brand-from research, designing, advertising, and finally the sale. Advertising, on the other hand is merely a component of the marketing process which is nothing but conveying the message through variety of mediums to promote the product.

However, advertising is a very important component of a marketing strategy and also the most expensive. Advertising sends the marketing message to public about your company, product or services. It also constitutes behind the scenes work like the process graphics, formation of various branding strategies, and making sure its package in a way that it targets the right audience.

The advertising strategy consists of things like placing ads, deciding what media outlet to use, timing (season), frequency, and etc. Advertisements are generally placed via mediums like television, direct mail, newspapers, social media, internet, emails, radio, magazines, mobile messaging, flyers, banners, and yes sometimes billboards etc. The most popular one is of course is television although advertising on social media has becoming increasingly popular as well.

The easiest way to differentiate advertising from marketing is to consider marketing as a cake and if you cut the cake, advertising is one of the pieces. The other pieces of cake are market research of the product, product designing, media planning, PR, product pricing, customer satisfaction, customer support, sales and many more. All these components or pieces of cake should work independently but collectively in achieving the bigger goal i.e. sell product and build company’s reputation in the market.

Marketing is a marathon process involving many tasks that involve hours sometimes days of research. The research part of marketing takes the longest duration as it involves thoroughly understanding the behavior of people towards a product.

Many companies when mistaking advertising for marketing, try to copy big companies like Coke and Pepsi in their efforts - focusing on things like logos, websites, and other advertisements materials. As a result, they ignore the work that goes on behind the scenes.

Many business owners are so hysterical about the logo of their company in their advertisements that they think that it will simply bring in the sales. But what makes a logo works is none other than the reputation of the company and the logo must have a feeling to it and should truly reflect company’s values.

One should also remember that these companies spend an intensive amount of time researching and making sure they understand their customers so that those expensive ads reach the right audience.

Rather than spending unnecessary money on branding your product one should invest money and time in really understanding the consumers that they can address their expectations. After building reputation and growing to a big size company then you can splurge on these lavish advertising ideas. Educating the consumers also helps as it will give them an understanding that you know what you do and are best at doing that.

Smart marketers are aggressive in approach rather than passive. They find ways to collect their customer's information such as, names, email addresses, and contact information so that it's easier to reach them when necessary.

Thus having a good marketing strategy is the best way to advertise. While it's hard work in the end your company will benefit.

  1. Many people think that marketing is all about advertising which is not true. One of the important part of marketing is to build long term relation with clients and customers. For this purpose, I use the Heymarket messaging service, which lets me stay connected to all the parties involved in my business with the help of regular text messages.

  2. Marketing is a much broader term, while advertising is just a small part of it. For emerging businesses, it’s better to work on a proper advertising campaign first before moving on to advanced marketing strategies. One of the best ways to get started with advertising is to hire an external Adwords Marketing agency and invest in PPC ads.
